This is the copy from famous XII century icon known as "Christ with Goldenhair" from Tretyakov gallery in Moscow.

Ancient Byzantine style face painting. Such Holy Faces were carried on flags by old russian troops.

Such icon was also hanged over main city gates and home entrances so nothing evil could pass through. These gates and pass through towers were usually called "Saviour's" (Spasskije), like in Moscow kremlyn.
