Св. Патрикий, креститель Ирландии

Icon size 17x22 cm, egg tempera, polished goldleaf, etching

Celebrated 17 March

There is no orthodox iconography for St. Patrick, and I think that neither roman-catholic bishop robes nor Eastern (St. Nicholas kind, as paint contemporary icon painters do not fit. I think I should research this more, Romanian style mosaics can help here.

As for this icon, I painted it as a gift to my nephew. My brother is a big fan of Irish culture (which means he likes Guinness, The Dubliners and good old peated single-barrell) so we called his son Patrick. I concentrated here on face expression. Celtic ornament on margins and green cloak make Saint Patrick look like kind of fairy tale wizard. He holds a clover leaf in his hand, by means of this he learned former pagans and druids about union of Trinity.

Polished gold on ornaments literally eradiates warmth.
